Michael A. Butt is the Founder and Honourary Chairman of Buttcon Limited, bringing more than five decades of leadership, innovation, and industry influence to the Canadian construction landscape. After beginning his construction career as a carpenter during his high school and university years, Michael earned his Bachelor of Applied Science in Civil Engineering from the University of Toronto in 1963. His early experience shaped a hands-on, solutions-driven leadership style that continues to define Buttcon today.
Michael’s professional journey advanced quickly. After joining Mitchell Construction, he rose to Managing Director, gaining international recognition for pioneering construction techniques that were published in leading industry journals across North America and the United Kingdom.
In 1973, Michael became President & CEO of M.A. Butt Construction Limited, and in 1979 he founded Buttcon Limited—setting the foundation for what has grown into one of Canada’s most respected construction companies. Michael is widely known for his ability to attract and empower strong, collaborative teams, a philosophy that has driven Buttcon’s sustained growth and industry success for more than four decades.
Beyond his leadership at Buttcon, Michael has played a prominent role in shaping the national construction sector. He has served as a Chairman of the Canadian Construction Association and on several high-profile boards, including Director roles with Armbro Enterprises Inc. and SC Infrastructure Inc.
His public and infrastructure leadership is equally distinguished. Michael served as Chairman of the Greater Toronto Airports Authority (GTAA), where he helped guide major capital development for one of the country’s most critical transportation hubs. He also served on the Board of Aecon, contributing his deep construction expertise to one of Canada’s largest infrastructure companies.
Michael is a long-standing member of the Association of Professional Engineers of Ontario and the Canadian Society for Civil Engineers. His career reflects an unwavering commitment to excellence, innovation, and the advancement of Canada’s construction industry—values that continue to shape Buttcon’s culture and legacy.
